Combined negative pressure wound therapy with irrigation and dwell time and artificial dermis prevents infection and promotes granulation formation in a ruptured giant omphalocele: a case report
CONCLUSIONS: Artificial membranes followed by artificial dermis were used to promote a fibrous capsule and artificial dermis granulation, which protects against organ damage. NPWTi-d achieved better control of infection and promoted wound healing. NPWTi-d combined with artificial dermis can effectively treat ruptured giant omphaloceles.PMID:36435753 | DOI:10.1186/s12887-022-03755-8

Deep Learning and Machine Learning with Grid Search to Predict Later Occurrence of Breast Cancer Metastasis Using Clinical Data
CONCLUSIONS: Our results show that deep learning with grid search overall performs at least as well as other machine learning methods when using non-image clinical data. It is interesting to note that some of the other machine learning methods, such as XGB, RF, and SVM, are very strong competitors of DFNN when incorporating grid search. It is also worth noting that the computation time required to do grid search with DFNN is much more than that required to do grid search with the other nine machine learning methods.PMID:36233640 | DOI:10.3390/jcm11195772

Lessons from a systematic literature search on diagnostic DNA methylation biomarkers for colorectal cancer: how to increase research value and decrease research waste
DiscussionThis systematic literature search revealed that major requirements to develop clinically relevant diagnostic CRC DNA methylation markers are often lacking. To avoid the resulting research waste, clinical needs, intended biomarker use and independent validation should be better considered prior to study design. In addition, improved reporting quality would facilitate meta-analysis, thereby increasing level of evidence and enabling clinical translation.PMID:35584320 | DOI:10.14309/ctg.0000000000000499

Zoom behavior during visual search modulates pupil diameter and reflects adaptive control states
This study tested predictions of this theory in the context of a societally important visual search task: the review and interpretation of digital whole slide images of breast biopsies by physicians (pathologists). As these medical images are searched, pathologists encounter difficult visual features and intermittently zoom in to examine features of interest. We propose that tonic and phasic pupil diameter changes during image review may correspond to perceived difficulty and dynamic shifts between exploration and exploitation control states. To examine this possibility, we monitored visual search behavior and tonic and ph...

Readability Analysis of Online Breast Cancer Surgery Patient Education Materials from National Cancer Institute-Designated Cancer Centers Compared with Top Internet Search Results
CONCLUSIONS: Patient education materials on breast cancer from both NCI-DCC and top Internet search results were written several reading grade levels higher than the NIH recommendation. Materials should be revised to enhance patient comprehension of breast cancer surgical treatment and guide patients in this important decision-making process to ultimately improve health outcomes.PMID:37707665 | DOI:10.1245/s10434-023-14279-5

Bladder Cancer and Google Trends: Associations Between US Search Patterns and Disease Outcomes May Show Need for Improved Awareness Strategies
AbstractInterest in and awareness of bladder cancer may translate to better health-seeking behaviors and earlier detection, given modifiable risk factors such as smoking. We assessed bladder cancer interest in the USA over the past 15  years as reflected by Internet search trends, and correlated these trends with epidemiologic patterns in bladder cancer. Google Trends was used to estimate US bladder cancer interest in the unit search volume index (SVI), which estimates the volume of online search activity for a specified period relative to the highest volume of searches within a specified location. Between January 2004 an...

Search Term Identification Methods for Computational Health Communication: Word Embedding and Network Approach for Health Content on YouTube
CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrated a retrieval technique to improve recall and minimize precision loss, which can be extended to various health topics on YouTube, a popular video-sharing social media platform. We discussed how health communication scholars can apply the technique to inspect the performance of the retrieval strategy before investing human coding resources and outlined suggestions on how such a technique can be extended to other health contexts.PMID:36040760 | DOI:10.2196/37862

Cancer-Related Search for Meaning Increases Willingness to Participate in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction
Conclusion. Our study indicates that patients searching for meaning are receptive to MBSR. Nonwhite patients and those experiencing high levels of anxiety are most likely to endorse a search for meaning. Future research is needed to understand how best to support patients who are searching for meaning and remove barriers to evidence-based programs like MBSR.

Using Digital Surveillance to Examine the Impact of Public Figure Pancreatic Cancer Announcements on Media and Search Query Outcomes
Conclusion Digital surveillance is an important tool for future cancer control research and practice. The current application of these methods suggested that pancreatic cancer announcements (diagnosis or death) by particular public figures stimulated media coverage of and online information seeking for pancreatic cancer.
